The September Newsletter for the Greens Beach Golf Club:
Message from the President:
With our now fast approaching Annual General Meeting on Friday, 23rd September at 8.00 pm your ballot papers for committee elections have been mailed out to you all for return either by mail or in person to the Club and placed in the ballot box provided. A reminder that all votes must be at the Club by Friday, 23rd September prior to the commencement of the AGM. We encourage you to please vote and to read the instructions carefully as quite a few votes were invalid last year.
The committee is currently looking into the purchase of a second hand fairway mower and also a rough cutter. The latter is a priority as the one we have nursed for many years is sadly not expected to survive the spring growth. For those who question why we save money and not just spend it on various things, a new fairway mower is $85,000 and a new rough cutter is $26,000 plus.
It was with great sadness that we farewelled Mike Duffy this past week. Mike was a valued member of the Club as well as a member of our own ‘The Beach Band’. Our love and support goes out to Elaine and all her family. Keep playing those drums Mike!
Update on the proposed 18 Hole Development by Eco Golf:
As reported in our July Newsletter, Eco Golf is preparing a draft Development Application which we are still waiting to receive so unfortunately there is nothing further to report to our members. We will keep you posted.
The greens have just been cored and with recent rain are expected to recover well. The new bunker at the back of the 7th green will be completed shortly as will the removal of fallen and risky trees around the course. Peter Blazely recently attended a Superintendents conference at Barnbougle which has turned out to be very informative for us. Thank you to Tim Hooper who donated 80 metres of flat line hose so that we can pump water in larger volumes to dams and off the course. As weather permits futher upgrades on tee beds are programmed.
Ladies Golf News:
Having experienced our wettest winter for a very long time, July was a total washout; we were unable to play for five consecutive weeks! Since our last newsletter in July we have managed to catch up on three Monthly Medals and Master Putter competitions. Jane Philpott winning one and Sandra Williams the other two Monthly Medals, and Jane Philpott, Sally Woods and Sandra Williams each winning the monthly Master Putter.
The Silver Spoon final was played at Longford Golf Club on the 15th September in atrocious conditions, reflected in the scores. Longford member Rose Falkiner won with 76 nett; Jane Philpott came in fourth place
We are all looking forward to playing on a dry course sooner rather than later. Joan Wesson, President.
Veterans Golf News:
Our Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, 7th September. We can confirm the committee is as follows: President – Wayne McConachy (6383 9542), Captain – Phillip Edwards (6383 9426), Secretary – Simon Hughes (0409 006 196}, Treasurer – Peter Kerslake (0448 930 134), and making up the committee – Ray Parish, Ken Burles and Ray Wright
It has been a very wet winter and with most members now returning from their trips north we look forward to less rain and warmer weather with lots of golf. Phil Edwards, Captain.
As a welcome back to those that have spent the winter north, a Jam Session with members of ‘The Beach Band’ will be held on Sunday, 25th September from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm. If you have an instrument and would like to jam you are most welcome to join in. We encourage you to come and support your Club which has experienced a rough few weeks with the course so wet.
Plans are underway for AFL Grand Final Day, Saturday, 1st October. You can play golf and then enjoy the grand final on the big screen. More details to follow.
A reminder that this year we will be combining the Celebration of our Club Champions Presentation Evening and Chrissy Drinks. Guest speaker on the night will be Mack Blazely. Mack will talk about his trip to Cambodia earlier in the year. The date for your diary is Friday, 16th December.
Wood Raffle. A wood raffle is now up and running and as the Club has experienced such bad weather with very little golf being played, the raffle has been extended and will run until the end of September. Tickets are $2.00 or 3 for $5.00. Tickets are available from the bar or the Greens Beach Shop.
